Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:  It is necessary for a school to require its students 40 hours’community service every year.

Task 2:  Does a school’s success depend on whether it has a large number of textbooks.?

Task 3:The school plans to employ some paid student technician to fix students’ computer problems. These technicians will live in the dormitory and provides students 24-hour service. In return for their work, their accommodation fare will be reduced by 50%. The girl considers it an excellent idea. She says that once she worked late on her assignment. Suddenly her computer broke down and she was unable to fix it. As a result she went to the library with a heavy burden of books and materials. The next day, her friend who helped her with the problem told her that it was only a minor problem. If only there had been a technician! In addition, it is a good idea to reduce the accommodation fare because it is rather expensive. It is very attractive to students like her.

Task 4.  Topic: contrast effect: The main idea is that when people see something, they will compare it with another similar thing rather than see it for the value itself. When judging someone, people tend to compare him or her with someone they are already familiar with. In the lecture, the professor mentioned his house-renting experience. At first, he saw many intolerably small and crap houses. Then all of a sudden, he saw a comparatively bigger and nice house. But when he moved in, he found that it was still too small to accommodate all hi s furniture. And it no longer looked that nice. What he should do is not to make comparisons with former houses but be patient and look for a really nice house.

Task 5 The boy has to help a history professor write a new book during the winter vacation. Therefore he could not go back home during the period. He is on the school basketball team so he has to exercise in a gym every day. But the school gym is not in service during winter vacation. One solution is that he goes to the gym in town, where the one-month-membership can just cover the whole vacation. Besides, there is all the equipment he needs. But the 75 dollar fare is quite expensive. Or, he could run outside to exercise but it will be really cold.

Task 6:Topic: “Fish and Fast Current” Fish in fast current met with two challenges: First, they can’t stay in a place and they would easily be washed away. But catfish who has big and muscular fin can swim against the current. Second, fish can’t eat food because of the fast current. Generally speaking, the current is fast in the middle of the river and it will be relatively slow near the bank. Trout takes advantage of this and stay near the bank where it can eat.
